Immigration Court Process in Ohio — What to Expect
How immigration court works, NTAs, hearings, appeals, bond, and finding legal help in Ohio.
Ohio immigration court
Cases from Ohio are heard at the Cleveland Immigration Court.
How removal proceedings work
Bond hearings
Detained individuals may request a bond hearing. The immigration judge sets bond based on flight risk and danger to the community. Minimum bond is $1,500 §8 U.S.C. 1226(a)(2)(A).
Right to counsel
You have the right to an attorney in immigration court, but the government does not provide one at public expense. Ohio does not provide state-funded immigration legal aid. Nonprofit organizations including the Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE), Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, and the International Institute of Akron provide limited immigration legal services. The Ohio Immigrant Alliance coordinates advocacy and some legal referrals.
Consumer protection against fraud
Beware of "notarios" or immigration consultants who are not licensed attorneys or DOJ-accredited representatives. Ohio's consumer protection law §1345.02 may provide recourse against immigration fraud.
