Nevada Ignition Interlock — Requirements & Costs
When interlock may be required and practical steps.
When Nevada requires an IID
required for first, second and felony DUI convictions as condition of obtaining an ignition interlock privilege to reinstate driving privilege; court may grant limited first-offense exceptions.
How long the IID must remain installed
185 days for first offense within 7 years; 1 year for second within 7 years; 3 years for felony DUI; period starts when DMV issues the ignition interlock privilege and is tolled during imprisonment, residential confinement, treatment supervision, parole or probation.
How the device works in practice
Violations and extensions
Common violations that can extend the IID period or trigger additional consequences:
- Failed startup tests (BAC above threshold)
- Failed rolling retests
- Missed calibration appointments
- Tampering with or attempting to circumvent the device
- Operating a vehicle without an IID when one is required
Costs
IID costs are borne by the offender and include:
- Installation fee
- Monthly monitoring/rental fee
- Removal fee
- Calibration fees (may be included in monthly rental or charged separately)
The IID as a path back to driving
While the IID is a restriction, it is also the mechanism that allows many offenders to resume driving sooner than they would under a full suspension. In Nevada, There is no fixed hard-suspension waiting period: at any time during the period of ineligibility the driver may obtain an ignition interlock privilege under NRS 483.490 by installing, at his or her own expense, an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he or she operates (§484C.210). The Department may issue a restricted license in lieu of the device only in narrow cases — the person is not a repeat intoxicated driver and either cannot provide a deep lung breath sample (certified by a physician or advanced practice registered nurse) or resides more than 100 miles from an IID manufacturer or its agent.. Complying fully with IID requirements — no violations, on-time calibration — is the fastest path to full reinstatement.
