Cases from Michigan are heard at the Detroit Immigration Court; Grand Rapids Immigration Court.
How removal proceedings work
Bond hearings
Detained individuals may request a bond hearing. The immigration judge sets bond based on flight risk and danger to the community. Minimum bond is $1,500 §8 U.S.C. 1226(a)(2)(A).
Right to counsel
You have the right to an attorney in immigration court, but the government does not provide one at public expense. Michigan does not provide state-funded immigration legal aid. Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC), Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit, and Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan provide limited immigration legal services. The Arab American and Chaldean Council and ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) serve Michigan's large Arab immigrant community.
Consumer protection against fraud
Beware of "notarios" or immigration consultants who are not licensed attorneys or DOJ-accredited representatives. Michigan's consumer protection law §MCL 445.903 may provide recourse against immigration fraud.
