Working While Receiving SSDI in Iowa — Work Incentives

Trial work period, SGA limits, Ticket to Work, and how returning to work affects your SSDI benefits in Iowa.

Social Security offers several work incentive programs that allow SSDI and SSI beneficiaries to test their ability to work without immediately losing benefits §42 U.S.C. 422.

Trial Work Period (SSDI)

SSDI recipients get a Trial Work Period (TWP) of 9 months (not necessarily consecutive) within a rolling 60-month window. During the TWP, you receive full SSDI benefits regardless of how much you earn §20 C.F.R. 404.1592.

DurationEffect on Benefits
Trial Work Period9 months in 60-month window §20 C.F.R. 404.1592Full benefits regardless of earnings
Extended Period of Eligibility36 months after TWP §20 C.F.R. 404.1592aBenefits paid in months under SGA
After EPEOngoingBenefits stop; must reapply if disabled

Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)

In 2024, SGA is $1,550/month for non-blind individuals §20 C.F.R. 404.1574(b)(2) and $2,590/month for blind individuals §20 C.F.R. 404.1584(d). Earning above SGA after your trial work period can result in benefit cessation.

Expedited Reinstatement

If your benefits stopped because you returned to work and you become unable to work again within 5 years, you can request Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) without filing a new application §42 U.S.C. 423.

SSI Work Incentives

SSI has different work incentive rules:

1
Earned Income Exclusion: SSA excludes the first $65 of earned income plus half the remainder
2
Student Earned Income Exclusion: Under-22 students can exclude up to $2,290/month
3
Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS): Set aside income/resources toward a work goal
4
Impairment-Related Work Expenses (IRWE): Deduct disability-related work costs from earnings

Ticket to Work Program

The Ticket to Work program provides free employment services to SSDI and SSI beneficiaries ages 18-64. In Iowa, you can use your "ticket" with an Employment Network (EN) or your state vocational rehabilitation agency (Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services (IVRS), Iowa Workforce Development) §42 U.S.C. 1320b-19.
